With the progressive movement toward LEED certified buildings in San Diego County, Benchmark has escalated its effort in assisting clients in this process. Currently, the company maintains at least a half a dozen LEED certified properties including La Jolla Commons, La Jolla Center I & II, Isis Pharmaceuticals in Carlsbad as well as the Sony Campus in Rancho Bernardo. On these sites, we strive to reduce emissions in several ways; using all hand tools or electric machinery at the La Jolla Commons combined with the use of organic fertilizers, mulch, and reclaimed water. At the two La Jolla Center properties, Benchmark has converted all reclaimed spray irrigation to high efficiency nozzles along with a drip system as well as applying slow release type fertilizers. On the flipside of our maintenance, Benchmark’s installation team is constructing LEED landscapes at various properties throughout the county. At the new SDSU Aztec Student Union, rainwater storage tanks are being installed, which combined with a green roof will make the new Student Union the only LEED certified student union in the entire CSU system.
