Liberty Station, San Diego’s new “Town Square”, was once a Naval Training Center, welcoming its first Navy recruits in 1923, and became a valuable military resource to defend the country during WWII and beyond. With its deep-rooted history, Liberty Station is a unique venue in San Diego built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, with connections to other historical landmarks in the city such as Balboa Park. A Balboa Park Superintendent even designed NTC’s original landscaping. The City of San Diego gained ownership of the property in 2000, repurposing the site into present-day Liberty Station.
Today, Liberty Station is offering more ways to experience the city’s history and entertainment with the addition of two new hotels – Hampton Inn and Marriott Towneplace Suites, both opening in early 2019. The hotels offer a range of accommodation options, in an ideal location situated on or near San Diego’s waterfront, providing easy access to Liberty Station’s arts, shopping and dining, history, fitness, and more.
Our team, led by Project Manager Dennis Bozykowski and Foreman Javier Cruz, collaborated with developer McMillin Real Estate Services, L.P and Landscape Architect KTU+A to create a community environment and enhance the accommodation experience by installing landscaping cohesive with the surrounding area along Harbor Drive – including a plant palette of Kentia and King palms, Phoenix dactylifera palms, Ficus and Spathodea trees, a mixture of Mediteranean shrubs and succulents, and site improvements for parking areas and perimeter entrances and walkways. Irrigation is controlled by Cal Sense; Netafim drip line and Hunter MP rotators will deliver the H2O. Storm water will be treated in bio retention basins before entering the San Diego Bay. Total approximate value for the contract was estimated at roughly $1.1 million.
