Drab to Fab: An Unused Parking Lot Turned Staff Garden Sanctuary
The recent renovation of a parking lot at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas provides hospital staff with an outdoor garden where they can relax, exercise, and enjoy meals. We began working on this unique project in August 2015 with a successful finish in October. Hired by Scripps Memorial and general contractor, Kitchell Construction, the renovation was lead by Benchmark’s Project Manager, Jay Worsham, and Foreman, Oscar Gomez. The project’s vision was to create a beautiful, useful space for staff members where a vacated parking lot exists. The project requirements included safe-off of utilities, removal and disposal of AC parking lot and landscape, Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) management, rough and finish grading, soil import, staking, drainage, irrigation, planting, decomposed granite pathways, as well as low-voltage lighting.
